چکیده
Downloading Wisdom from Online Crowds The internet and other large textual databases contain billions of documents: is there useful information in the number of documents written about different topics? We propose, based on the premise that the occurrence of a phenomenon increases the likelihood that people write about it, that the relative frequency of documents discussing a phenomenon can be used to proxy for the corresponding occurrence-frequency. After establishing the conditions under which such proxying is likely to be successful, we construct proxies for a number of demographic variables in the US and for corruption across countries and US states and cities, obtaining average correlations with occurrence-frequencies of 0.47 and 0.61 respectively. We also replicate results from two separate published papers establishing the correlates of corruption at both the state and country level. Finally, we construct the first index of corruption in US cities and study its correlates. JEL Classification: J11, C81, B40

A Platform for Studying Progressive Self Management in Online Communities
Introduction The World Wide Web is witnessing an explosion in new forms of online communities enabled by advances in user-created content, social networks and by leveraging the Wisdom of Crowds (Porter 2004). These advances are empowering online communities to move from mere discussion fora to viable, valuegenerating organizations or value networks. Value networks are composed of individuals or...
متن کاملInterval Elicitation of Forecasts in a Prediction Market Reveals Lack of Anchoring "Bias"
DAGGRE was part of a program that began in 2010 as a multi-team forecasting challenge sponsored by IARPA. To harness the “wisdom of crowds”, researchers built an online combinatorial prediction market for predicting events of interest to the U.S. intelligence community. Prediction markets have a long history (See Rhode & Stumpf, 2004.), and their value is described at length by Surowiecki (2004...
متن کاملPeer Produced Innovation: An Exploration Of 'The Wisdom Of Crowds' In Virtual Worlds
While researchers have examined the role of individuals in crowdsourcing for open innovation purposes (wisdom in crowds) there is a gap in our understanding of the collective intelligence of communities for such purposes (wisdom of crowds). The objective of this exploratory study is therefore to explore the peer production of innovation; specifically the challenges in leveraging the collective ...

The use of collective intelligence applications in educational settings has been reported in the literature for almost two decades. These collective intelligence applications aggregate individual knowledge via different synchronous and asynchronous mode of communications and Web 2.0 applications which support learning, communication and collaboration activities, and create “Wisdom of the Crowds...
